BALTIMORE Aug 27th 2024 – Three months have passed since Techstars held its groundbreaking Equitech Accelerator Demo Day in May, an event that continues to resonate within the tech and entrepreneurial communities. The showcase, which featured 10 startups focused on providing access and equity across various fields, has since sparked ongoing discussions about innovation and inclusivity in the tech sector.

The event, held at the M&T Bank Exchange in Baltimore, was highlighted by a keynote speech from Brian D. Pieninck, president and CEO of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. Pieninck’s emphasis on leadership, innovation, and social contribution in supporting entrepreneurial talent, regardless of background, set the tone for what has become a continuing conversation in the months since. His words, “It’s not just about technology, it’s about creating opportunities for everyone,” have become a rallying cry for those pushing for greater diversity in tech.

Adam Phillips, Executive Director of the Equitech Accelerator, spoke passionately about the program’s mission. The three-month initiative, designed to train and support minority founders and businesses offering technologies that promote equality, has since been lauded as a model for similar programs across the country. Phillips’ vision of how supporting diverse founders can lead to reinvestment in underserved communities has gained traction, with several cities now exploring similar initiatives.

A notable aspect of the May event was the attendance of 25 college students studying entrepreneurship, technology, engineering, or trades. In the months since, several of these students have reported that the experience significantly influenced their career paths, with some even beginning to develop their own startup ideas.
